Throughout our 50+ years in business, Hidden Lane has had 3 owners, each of whom sold the business to a dedicated employee. This has kept our company culture alive from generation to generation.
In 1957 Bob Harris was working at the Department of Agriculture and propagating azaleas in his spare time. His hobby soon turned into a retail business which he named Hidden Lane Nursery because it was located on the corner of Old Courthouse Road and “Hidden Lane” in Vienna.
Mr. Harris hired Roger Brewster (Va Tech Horticulture ‘54) in 1968 to help him establish the design/build side of the business. Within a few years, landscaping became the dominate part of the company.
Roger purchased the business in 1974 and moved the company to Oakton Road in Oakton. Peter Murray (Va Tech Horticulture ’82) was hired in 1982 to help Roger run his jobs as well as doing his own design work.
After 20 years in business, Roger and his wife decided to retire and sold the company to Peter in 1994. Peter moved the company to our current location on Lawyers Road in 1997. This property was once one of the old dairy farms in Fairfax County. We are proud that we have been able to convert the farmhouse into our offices and the old dairy barn into our equipment and storage area. The meadows where cows once grazed are now where we grow specimen trees and have display gardens.
We attribute much of our success to being in a business we love and having a company culture that encourages everyone to treat Hidden Lane Landscaping as their own. With our current talented staff, we look forward to seeing the next generation take its leadership position as we continue to grow over the next 50 years.
